Qatari Emir and Trump Engage in Talks Over US-Iran Peace Efforts

Doha: Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and US President Donald Trump engaged in a telephone conversation to discuss ongoing mediation efforts aimed at resolving the conflict between the United States and Iran, as announced by the Amiri Diwan of Qatar.

According to Anadolu Agency, the discussions centered on recent developments in the region, specifically focusing on regional and international initiatives to promote calm and reduce tensions. A significant part of the conversation was dedicated to supporting diplomatic efforts spearheaded by Pakistan to prevent further escalation and maintain international peace and security.

The dialogue also touched upon the critical importance of maintaining open communication channels to address prevailing issues, ensuring maritime security, safeguarding strategic waterways, and guaranteeing the uninterrupted flow of global supply and energy chains. Sheikh Tamim reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to peaceful resolutions and backing diplomatic endeavors to stabilize the region during the call.

Earlier this year, the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran in February, prompting Tehran to retaliate with attacks targeting Israel and US allies in the Gulf, as well as closing the Strait of Hormuz. A ceasefire was initiated on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, although subsequent negotiations in Islamabad did not yield a lasting agreement. President Trump later announced an indefinite extension of the truce.

Currently, Pakistan's army chief is in Tehran, intensifying efforts to facilitate a US-Iran agreement. Discussions are reportedly focusing on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, Iran's nuclear program, and Tehran's insistence on sanctions relief.
