Doha: Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and US President Donald Trump engaged in a phone call to discuss regional developments, as announced by Qatar's Emiri Diwan.

According to Anadolu Agency, the phone conversation focused on regional and international efforts to de-escalate tensions and promote stability. The statement, as reported by Qatar News Agency, highlighted Emir Tamim's emphasis on prioritizing political and diplomatic solutions and fostering dialogue among all involved parties to ensure regional security and stability, while preventing further tension and escalation.

The leaders also underscored the importance of ongoing dialogue on current issues and the necessity to safeguard maritime navigation, strategic waterways, and the continuity of global supply and energy flows. This conversation comes in the wake of heightened regional tensions, which have escalated since late February following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran. The strikes resulted in the death of over 3,000 people, including Iran's then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several senior military figures and government officials.

Tehran has retaliated by targeting Israel and Gulf countries that host US military bases, and by closing the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global shipping. A ceasefire, brokered by Pakistan, took effect on April 8, and efforts to reach a more comprehensive agreement have been ongoing since.
