Ankara: Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani is set to visit Tehran on Thursday to engage in discussions centered on de-escalation efforts.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sheikh Mohammed's visit marks a significant diplomatic move as he is scheduled to meet with several Iranian officials. The main agenda will focus on reducing tensions and fostering an environment conducive to dialogue. The Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesman, Majed Al Ansari, conveyed this message on X, highlighting the importance of the discussions for regional stability.

Key topics of the talks will include the freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and efforts to restore the waterway's status quo prior to February 28. This visit is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first official visit by a Qatari premier to Iran since the conflict between Washington and Tehran erupted following US and Israeli strikes on Iran earlier this year.

The situation has been further complicated by the stalled implementation of a memorandum of understanding signed in June, which involved US and Iranian commitments, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar. Recent military exchanges between the US and Iran have escalated tensions, with Tehran retaliating against US military assets in allied Arab states.
