Gaza: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Monday stated that a lasting ceasefire in Gaza is essential to ending the cycle of violence and civilian suffering, pledging readiness to help reunite families and ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian aid.
According to Anadolu Agency, ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric emphasized the importance of a ceasefire in a recent statement. "A lasting ceasefire is critical to saving lives and breaking the cycle of death and destruction," she said. The organization expressed its readiness to act as a neutral humanitarian intermediary, aiming to facilitate the return of hostages and detainees to their families. Additionally, the ICRC is prepared to deliver essential aid into Gaza, ensuring its safe distribution to civilians who are in dire need.
The humanitarian organization highlighted the severe hardship faced by both Israeli and Palestinian families, pointing out that hostages remain in captivity and thousands of Palestinian detainees are still held. "Their families anxiously await their release," the ICRC mentioned, underlining the urgency of the situation.
In Gaza, civilians endure "unimaginable suffering" due to ongoing hostilities and stringent restrictions on life-saving aid, according to the ICRC. The organization stressed that humanitarian assistance must be restored to full capacity and safely distributed to those most in need.
Since October 2023, the ICRC has played a significant role in facilitating the release of 148 hostages and 1,931 detainees. The organization has also been involved in the return of human remains, allowing families the opportunity to mourn their lost loved ones with dignity.
