Washington: A prominent Republican US lawmaker introduced a measure to cancel $500 million in funding for Israel's missile defense system, citing the cost of foreign aid amid growing national debt. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene submitted the amendment during floor debate at the House of Representatives on a Pentagon appropriations package for 2026 that calls for a reduction in funds designated for aid to Israel.

According to Anadolu Agency, Greene emphasized the financial burden of foreign aid on American taxpayers, highlighting the nation's $37 trillion debt. She argued that the continuous flow of billions in aid to foreign countries needs to be reassessed. Greene's amendment specifically targets $500 million allocated for Israel's missile defense system, pointing out Israel's nuclear capabilities and self-sufficiency in defense.

Greene also highlighted the significant US financial support to Israel, which includes $3.8 billion in annual foreign assistance and an additional $8.7 billion security package passed in April 2024. She criticized the usage of 15% - 20% of US terminal high altitude area defense missiles in recent escalations involving Israeli strikes on Iran, which cost over $800 million.

Furthermore, Greene condemned Israel's military actions in Gaza, particularly referencing the bombing of a Catholic church, which resulted in casualties and injuries. She expressed concerns over the ongoing conflict and its humanitarian impact.

Israel remains a major recipient of US aid, second only to Ukraine, and was the largest recipient from 1946 to 2024.
