Beijing: Chinese researchers have developed more than 30,000 artificial intelligence-induced climate mitigation scenarios, as reported in a study published in the July issue of the journal Nature Climate Change. The study highlights the potential of merging deep learning (DL) with integrated assessment models (IAMs) to address challenges in climate mitigation scenario generation.
According to Anadolu Agency, the study delves into the capabilities of DL to extract hidden patterns from high-dimensional data, enabling the generation of future scenarios for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This approach aims to overcome limitations faced by IAMs, such as data scarcity in certain regions and biases from existing data.
The study acknowledges that the DL framework currently replicates only a subset of key variables, significantly fewer than the hundreds required for comprehensive IAM scenarios. Despite these limitations, deep learning offers support by creating faster, more diverse, and region-specific scenarios, aiding policymakers and developing countries in planning climate actions. Researchers note that while DL cannot yet replace traditional models, it provides valuable enhancements to existing methodologies.
