Rockstar Games Denies Firing Employees Over Union Activities

Glasgow:Rockstar Games, the developer known for the Grand Theft Auto video game series, has denied allegations of firing employees due to their union activities. This denial comes as an employment tribunal investigates the dismissal of 34 workers.

According to Anadolu Agency, Robert Spampinato, vice president of human resources at Rockstar Games, refuted claims that he had directed managers to monitor employees' union membership. Spampinato stated during the tribunal in Glasgow, Scotland, that the allegations were "categorically not true."

The case involves 23 former employees, most of whom were based at Rockstar North in Edinburgh. They are contesting their October 2025 dismissals with the assistance of the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB). The union contends that these workers were targeted due to their involvement in union activities, whereas Rockstar asserts the dismissals were due to sharing confidential information on a Discord server.

The tribunal was informed that an anonymous employee had provided details about union meetings and recruitment activities to Human Resources managers. Spampinato admitted that this information aided management in addressing workplace grievances but denied any efforts to curb union activity.

When questioned about the timing of the dismissals in October 2025, despite having some information earlier, Spampinato explained that Rockstar was in "crisis mode" due to delays in the development of Grand Theft Auto 6. The game is expected to be released on November 19 after experiencing two postponements.

The tribunal proceedings are ongoing.
