Ankara: The Istanbul State Opera and Ballet is set to enchant audiences with a performance of Prokofiev's ballet, Romeo and Juliet, on Saturday at the Ataturk Cultural Center in the Beyoglu district.

According to Anadolu Agency, the ballet, adapted from Shakespeare's timeless play, seeks to seamlessly combine fundamental human emotions such as love, passion, hatred, and sacrifice in a graceful and aesthetic manner. The choreography, crafted by Ricardo Amarante specifically for the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet's dancers, merges the technical complexities of classical ballet with compelling storytelling to bring the legendary tale to life on stage.

Aysem Sunal Savaskurt, Chief Choreographer of the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet, emphasized the significance of Romeo and Juliet in the ballet world. "I have been the chief choreographer for ten years, and we have produced many beautiful works, all of which I hold dear, but this one is truly special," Savaskurt said. She added that both lead dancers and the ensemble are extensively involved in this intense and dramatically weighty production, which has seen contributions from around 200 people.

Dancer Batur Buklu, who plays the role of Romeo, shared his excitement about the performance. He noted that Romeo and Juliet was one of the two roles he had always dreamed of dancing. "Romeo is a character in search of love, someone who is in love with the very idea of love. Juliet, in turn, falls deeply for Romeo," Buklu explained. He concluded by highlighting the depth of the characters' connection, saying, "They discover something so special that they are willing to sacrifice their lives for it."
