Rubio Highlights Ongoing Diplomatic Efforts with Iran Amid Tensions

Atlanta:U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Saturday that diplomatic contacts with Iran have persisted despite rising tensions in the Middle East, emphasizing Washington's openness to a peaceful resolution if core security concerns are addressed.

According to Anadolu Agency – English, Rubio mentioned that there is no fixed timetable for the diplomatic efforts but stressed that communication channels remain open. He noted that talks with Iran have never ceased, with conversations occurring both directly and more frequently through intermediaries.

Rubio highlighted President Donald Trump's preference for resolving global challenges diplomatically and peacefully. He indicated that Washington is open to a diplomatic outcome as long as it does not compromise U.S. national security or leave principal concerns unresolved. These concerns include Iran's nuclear program and its perceived destabilizing activities in the region.

Rubio accused Iran of targeting commercial shipping in international waters, warning that such actions threaten maritime security and global energy and food supplies. He also cited Iran's support for regional groups like the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon, which he argued contribute to instability and security issues for neighboring countries.

In addressing Gulf security, Rubio affirmed Washington's defense commitments to Saudi Arabia, indicating that the U.S. remains in regular contact with Riyadh and intends to honor its agreements.
