Enerhodar:Moscow Russia has accused Ukraine of escalating attacks on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and the nearby city of Enerhodar. The announcement was made on Monday by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, who criticized international organizations for their response to Ukraine's actions.
According to Anadolu Agency – English, Zakharova specifically targeted the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for what she described as a restrained response to Kyiv's "provocative actions." She accused these international bodies of failing to explicitly identify Ukraine as the responsible party.
Zakharova claimed that Ukrainian forces targeted civilian facilities earlier in the week, including an art school and a fire and rescue station operated by Russia's Emergencies Ministry. She alleged that the Kyiv regime is attempting to destabilize the plant's operations by intimidating its personnel, with the aim of increasing casualties and creating a radiation-contaminated zone in the Zaporizhzhia region.
The spokesperson further criticized Western support for Ukraine, claiming it creates radiological risks in Europe and endangers its own citizens. Zakharova mentioned that Moscow is actively informing the international community about Ukrainian attacks and is taking measures to protect the plant, its personnel, and Enerhodar residents.
The situation surrounding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is Europe's largest and one of the world's ten largest nuclear facilities, remains tense. Both Moscow and Kyiv frequently accuse each other of conducting attacks around the facility in southeastern Ukraine. IAEA personnel have been stationed at the plant since September 1, 2022, with Russia having controlled the facility since March 2022.
