Moscow: Russia's foreign minister emphasized the importance of negotiations and unity in the Middle East, amid escalating tensions following US and Israeli attacks on Iran. Speaking at a meeting of the Gorchakov Fund Board of Trustees, Sergey Lavrov highlighted Russia's strong partnerships with Gulf countries and Iran, underscoring Russia's commitment to regional stability.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lavrov stated that Russia is actively sharing its assessments of the Middle East situation with Iran and the Gulf Cooperation Council members. He reiterated Russia's long-standing proposal for a security concept in the Persian Gulf, aimed at fostering cooperation between Arab monarchies and Iran. This initiative includes measures to enhance military transparency and build mutual confidence.

Lavrov argued that these straightforward steps, already proven in various global regions, could alleviate regional tensions. He stressed that negotiations, unity, and balancing interests are crucial for the Middle East, opposing any attempts to impose external dictates, particularly on Iran.

The region has witnessed escalating violence since the US and Israel launched a joint offensive on Iran on February 28, resulting in over 1,340 casualties, including the death of then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iran has since retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.

In addition to Middle East concerns, Lavrov also expressed "serious concern" over growing external pressure on Cuba. He reaffirmed Russia's solidarity with Cuba's right to a sovereign development path and pledged continued support, including material assistance.

This statement coincided with Cuba's deputy foreign minister's announcement of preparations for potential US military aggression. The longstanding US-Cuba adversarial relationship was further intensified under the Trump administration, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticizing Cuba's leadership over a nationwide power outage.
