Moscow: Russia stated that it is 'extremely concerned' about the rising tensions in the Middle East, urging all parties involved to exercise restraint and immediately halt military strikes. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova addressed reporters during a press briefing, emphasizing the urgency of the situation.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zakharova highlighted the recent escalation between the US and Iran, which began with what she described as "unprovoked US-Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran." She called for an immediate cessation of strikes and expressed disapproval of attacks on civilian infrastructure.
Zakharova reiterated Russia's stance that a political and diplomatic resolution based on international law and the security interests of all regional states is the only viable solution. She stressed the importance of returning to a diplomatic framework to ensure the region's security and stability.
Further, Zakharova mentioned that Russia is prepared to assist in finding and implementing mutually agreeable solutions. She noted that Russia regularly communicates its diplomatic position to the United States, though the situation remains "extremely volatile" despite ongoing discussions.
The developments follow the US launching strikes on southern Iran, with US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirming that US fighter jets targeted Iranian air defense systems and radar sites near the Strait of Hormuz. This action was in response to the downing of a US Army Apache helicopter.
In retaliation, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced attacks on 21 American military targets at US air and naval bases across the region early Wednesday. The incident is part of a series of fluctuating tensions, with Israel and Iran exchanging military strikes before reaching a fragile ceasefire.
