Russia Monitors NATO as Lavrov Warns of Vigilance

Moscow:Russia is keeping a close watch on NATO's statements regarding preparations for a possible Russian attack, as stated by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a news conference in Moscow following discussions with Timor-Leste's Foreign Minister, Bendito Freitas.

According to Anadolu Agency, Lavrov emphasized that Russia remains vigilant in response to NATO's rhetoric and is focused on achieving President Vladimir Putin's objectives in the ongoing war in Ukraine. Lavrov highlighted the importance of preventing threats from Western neighbors and mentioned recent tensions over Kaliningrad. He noted that Putin has been clear that any attack on Kaliningrad or other Russian territories would provoke a response, citing reassurances from NATO leaders that the alliance has no plans to attack Russia and remains defensive.

Lavrov also addressed issues concerning Afghanistan, expressing regret over the absence of a final document from the latest Moscow Format consultations due to tensions with Kabul. He attributed part of the dispute to the presence of ISIS militants and called for an end to external interference. Lavrov expressed confidence in the interest of Afghanistan and Pakistan to normalize relations and emphasized Russia's efforts to facilitate solutions to ongoing problems.

In his discussions with Freitas, Lavrov described the talks as highly productive, focusing on expanding cooperation in sectors such as energy, mining, fisheries, and tourism. Russia expressed readiness to increase energy supplies to Timor-Leste and support educational and law enforcement partnerships. The talks also covered cooperation through ASEAN and developments in the Asia-Pacific region, with criticism of Western attempts to create exclusive bloc structures.

The ministers addressed issues related to the Middle East, Iran, and the Ukraine conflict, while also planning events for the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations in May 2027. The Russian Foreign Ministry highlighted the substantial exchange of views on bilateral issues, emphasizing the need for deeper political dialogue, expanded trade, and economic cooperation. Freitas also discussed international and regional issues, advocating for closer coordination within the UN system and the Russia-ASEAN dialogue partnership.
