Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin has conveyed Moscow's willingness to engage with the United States in discussions aimed at reducing defense budgets, suggesting a substantial 50% cut for both nations to alleviate global military tensions. Putin articulated, 'Russia is ready to discuss with the US the possibility of cutting defense spending,' emphasizing the potential benefits of such reductions.
According to Anadolu Agency, Putin underscored the significance of bilateral relations in forthcoming engagements between Moscow and Washington. He noted, 'The nearest and possible future contacts between Russia and the US will primarily address our bilateral ties.' In terms of economic collaboration, Putin declared Russia's preparedness to supply 2 million tons of aluminum to the US market to aid in price stabilization. Additionally, he proposed joint aluminum production ventures, citing the Krasnoyarsk region as a potential site for cooperation.
Putin further addressed the topic of rare earth metals, extending an offer of collaboration to the US, particularly in regions such as Donbas and Novorossiya. He dismissed any US-Ukraine agreement on rare earth resources, remarking, 'That's not our business,' and advised that Kyiv and Washington should first assess the resources before entering into such agreements. Putin highlighted Russia's prominent position in rare earth metal reserves.
Turning to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Putin accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of obstructing negotiations with Moscow. He claimed, 'Zelenskyy cornered himself with his decree banning negotiations with Russia,' arguing that Zelenskyy avoids talks as they would terminate martial law and prompt elections in Ukraine. Putin also criticized European Union leaders for their close ties to Kyiv, suggesting that they are unable to alter their stance without losing face.
He affirmed that Russia harbors no objection to maintaining Ukraine's statehood but insisted that Ukraine should not serve as a platform against Russia. While welcoming EU involvement in potential peace talks, Putin emphasized the importance of considering the perspectives of BRICS and other nations. 'The EU's involvement in Ukraine negotiations could be valuable, but Europe cannot impose conditions,' he asserted.
