Moscow: Russia remains committed to engaging constructively within the G20 framework but has expressed concerns over the politicization of the group's agenda. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized Russia's interest in the platform, stating, "We remain interested in continuing work within the G20."
According to Anadolu Agency, Peskov highlighted that several countries share Russia's concerns regarding the political language in summit documents. He noted, "There are attempts to politicize the document, which, naturally, is perceived with hostility, including by us." Peskov stressed that the G20 is designed to address global economic challenges rather than political disputes.
Peskov reiterated Russia's stance against introducing political elements into the organization's agenda, emphasizing that the G20 remains a "much more representative format" for discussions on global economic issues. He affirmed the continued significance of the G20 for many countries. Under South Africa's presidency, a meeting of G20 leaders is scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on November 22-23.
In a related issue, Peskov addressed rising tensions between the US and Venezuela. He urged the US to refrain from actions that could destabilize the region, following Washington's announcement of a new operation targeting drug cartels in Venezuela. "We hope that no actions will be taken that could destabilize the situation in the Caribbean and around Venezuela, and that everything will be in accordance with international law," Peskov said.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced Operation Southern Spear to counter drug trafficking networks in Venezuela. President Donald Trump has recently deployed military assets to the Caribbean and Latin America, citing the necessity to curb the flow of drugs to the US. However, analysts view these actions as a strategy to remove President Nicolas Maduro from power.
