Moscow: Russia and Ukraine on Monday traded accusations over the latest drone attacks that killed at least six people.
According to Anadolu Agency, Sergey Aksyonov, the Russian-installed head of Crimea, which was annexed by Moscow in 2014, reported on Telegram that several facilities on a sanatorium in the resort town of Foros were damaged by a Ukrainian drone attack.
Aksyonov stated that a school building in Foros was also damaged, and fragments from downed drones caused a fire near the resort city of Yalta. He confirmed that three people were killed and 16 others injured in Foros. Separately, the Russian Defense Ministry claimed its air defenses shot down 114 Ukrainian drones overnight, with 10 intercepted over Crimea. The ministry described the resort area strike as a 'terrorist attack,' noting there are no military facilities there, and it occurred at approximately 7.30 pm local time (1630GMT).
Meanwhile, Zaporizhzhia Governor Ivan Fedorov reported three fatalities and two injuries in an attack on the southeastern region's administrative center. In a Telegram statement, Fedorov mentioned the attack happened around 4.30 am local time (0130GMT), with at least five aerial bombs hitting the city of Zaporizhzhia. He noted that 15 multi-story buildings and 10 private buildings were damaged, emphasizing that none were linked to military infrastructure, calling it a targeted terror on a peaceful city.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on US social media company X, indicated that search and rescue efforts were ongoing in Zaporizhzhia and extended condolences to the victims' families. Concurrently, Ukraine's air force claimed that its defenses downed 132 out of 141 drones launched by Russia overnight, also reporting the attack in Zaporizhzhia and noting the launch of aerial bombs near the Moscow-controlled city of Tokmak. Independent verification of these claims remains challenging due to the ongoing conflict since February 2022.
