Moscow: Russia and Ukraine said on Sunday that their energy infrastructures were targeted in overnight airstrikes.

According to Anadolu Agency - English, the Ukrainian Energy Ministry announced via Telegram that energy infrastructure in the central Poltava region, particularly in the industrial city of Kremenchuk, was hit. Restoration efforts are currently underway to restore power as swiftly as possible.

The statement from the Ukrainian Energy Ministry also mentioned that hourly outage schedules and power limitation schedules for industrial consumers and businesses are currently in effect throughout Ukraine. Additionally, the energy infrastructure in the neighboring Chernihiv region was also affected, with local authorities reporting one fatality.

Acting Poltava Governor Volodymyr Kohut reported fires breaking out due to direct hits on several energy facilities and falling debris. Meanwhile, Kremenchuk Mayor Vitalii Maletskyi confirmed that water supply services to the city have been partially restored. Ukraine's Air Force revealed on Telegram that its air defenses successfully shot down 175 out of 241 drones and four out of 10 missiles launched by Russia overnight.

Russian authorities have yet to comment on the attack or Ukraine's claims. However, the Russian Defense Ministry reported intercepting 77 Ukrainian drones launched at their country overnight, with 42 downed in Saratov and 12 in the Rostov region. In Rostov, Governor Yuri Slyusar noted on Telegram that a power transmission tower was damaged, resulting in 250 residents losing access to electricity. Ukraine has not yet responded to this claim.

These developments occur amidst frequent accusations between Moscow and Kyiv about targeting each other's energy facilities, especially as winter approaches. Discussions are ongoing regarding a proposed US-drafted plan aimed at advancing peace efforts in Ukraine.
