Moscow: Russia's pipeline gas exports to Europe increased by 14% in the year 2024, reaching a total of 31.1 billion cubic meters. This marks a significant rise from the 28.15 billion cubic meters recorded in 2023, as reported by the state-run Tass news agency based on data from Gazprom.
According to Anadolu Agency, the increase in gas supplies was particularly notable in the southern and southeastern regions of Europe. Gas transported via the TurkStream pipeline witnessed a 23% rise, amounting to 16.7 billion cubic meters in 2024. In contrast, gas supplies to western and central European countries through Ukraine saw a 6% increase, totaling 15.4 billion cubic meters over the same period.
The report highlights that in December 2024 alone, there was a 3% month-on-month increase in Russian gas exports to Europe via the TurkStream pipeline. This growth comes amidst a backdrop of complex geopolitical dynamics and shifting energy demands across the continent.
The Gazprom data underscores the expiration of the gas supply agreement between Russia and Ukraine, which ended on January 1, 2024. The agreement had facilitated the annual transport of 40 billion cubic meters of Russian gas through Ukraine. Following Ukraine's decision not to renew the agreement, Gazprom has ceased operations through this route as of Wednesday, posing potential challenges for future gas transit arrangements in the region.
