Davos: Saudi Arabia has urged for the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria since the time of the former Assad regime that was toppled last month. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan participated in a panel discussion, Diplomacy amid Disorder, where he discussed several regional developments, including Syria.

According to Anadolu Agency, Faisal bin Farhan highlighted Riyadh's observations from meetings with the new Syrian administration, noting a strong desire from Syria to engage with regional partners and the international community. He emphasized the importance of lifting sanctions on Syria to provide broader assistance to the Syrian people. This move aligns with Saudi Arabia's ongoing humanitarian and relief efforts aimed at alleviating the humanitarian suffering in Syria.

The Saudi Foreign Minister also underscored the necessity for the international community to participate in fostering progress and supporting the Syrian people to achieve a better future. The calls for lifting sanctions resonate with the new Syrian administration's objectives, as Syria's newly appointed foreign minister, Asaad al-Shaibani, has already paid two official visits to Saudi Arabia since his appointment in December 2024.

Bashar al-Assad, who led Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus on December 8, marking the end of his family's decades-long rule. The new administration, under the leadership of Ahmed al-Sharaa, has also reiterated the call for lifting sanctions to aid recovery from nearly 14 years of civil war.
