Ankara: In an operation conducted by Trkiye's National Intelligence Organization (MIT), Mehmet Goren, a senior figure of the terror group ISIS (Daesh), was captured in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region and brought to Trkiye, according to information obtained from security sources on Monday.
According to Anadolu Agency, the individual had taken an active role in ISIS camps and had risen to a senior position over time. As a result of MIT's intelligence work, it was identified that Mehmet Goren, codenamed Yahya, had been tasked with carrying out suicide attacks on behalf of the terror group.
The suspect had agreed to carry out suicide attacks targeting civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Trkiye, and Europe. MIT determined that the terrorist had traveled from Trkiye to the Afghanistan-Pakistan region and had survived airstrikes against ISIS elements in Pakistan.
The suspect had been operating with Ozgur Altun, codenamed Abu Yasir Al Turki, who previously played an active role in transferring ISIS members from Trkiye to the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. Altun was captured in the past, brought to Trkiye, and arrested, the sources added.
