Belgrade:Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has resigned ahead of the snap parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25. He plans to run for prime minister as the candidate for the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).

According to Anadolu Agency, Vucic's resignation comes during his second term as president. Due to constitutional restrictions, he cannot seek a third term. In the interim, Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic will take over as acting president until a new president is elected.

The resignation occurs amid ongoing pressure from student-led protests, with the country preparing for both parliamentary and early presidential elections. Serbian law mandates that a presidential election must be held within three months following a president's resignation.
