Sudan: Several people were killed and others injured after projectiles hit refugee camps along the Sudan-Ethiopia border during clashes between Ethiopian government forces and fighters from Ethiopia's Tigray region, Sudan's Interior Ministry said Sunday.

According to Anadolu Agency, major clashes broke out early Saturday between Tigray regional forces and the Ethiopian army in the border area between Sudan and Ethiopia, resulting in projectiles landing inside several refugee camps and causing a number of deaths and injuries, as stated by the ministry. The exact number of casualties was not specified.

The Sudanese ministry highlighted that Sudan's Commission for Refugees is following the developments with deep concern. The ministry's statement emphasized that the border strip is a critical transit and reception area for asylum seekers arriving from Ethiopia, warning that the ongoing military buildup could lead to a further influx of refugees and exacerbate security and humanitarian challenges.

The commission has made an appeal to international and regional communities, the United Nations, and humanitarian organizations to uphold their moral and humanitarian responsibilities by promoting peace and security in the region and ensuring the protection of refugees. An urgent call for humanitarian assistance has also been made to prevent the situation from deteriorating further.

The commission assured that it would continue to monitor the humanitarian situation of the refugees in collaboration with its partners and work diligently to provide for their basic needs. Ethiopian media reported that the recent fighting marks the second-largest confrontation since the Ethiopian government and Tigray forces signed a peace agreement nearly four years ago. The agreement, mediated by the African Union and signed in South Africa on November 2, 2022, aimed to end the war, establish a permanent ceasefire, disarm Tigray fighters, and restore federal authority in the region.
