Elizabeth City: A shooting on the Elizabeth City State University campus in the southeastern US state of North Carolina early Sunday resulted in one fatality and left six others injured, prompting a campus lockdown, the university announced in a statement.

According to Anadolu Agency, the incident occurred at the heart of Elizabeth City State University's campus following Yard Fest, the final event of the historically Black university's weeklong Viking Fest celebration. The statement revealed that a 24-year-old man, who was not affiliated with the university, died at the scene. His identity is being withheld until his family has been notified.

The statement further detailed that four individuals, including three students, sustained gunshot wounds, while two others were injured amid the ensuing chaos. None of the injuries were reported to be life-threatening, and all injured parties were transported to the hospital for treatment.

"The university is deeply saddened by this senseless act," the statement expressed. It also highlighted that the ECSU Police, in collaboration with the Elizabeth City Police Department, Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office, Camden County Sheriff's Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, responded promptly and are actively investigating the situation.

The lockdown was eventually lifted, though campus patrols have been increased as a precautionary measure. Access to the center of campus remained restricted into Sunday evening.
