South Korea and US Set to Engage in Pivotal Trade Talks

Washington: South Korean Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok has embarked on a significant visit to the United States to engage in the first round of high-level trade negotiations with officials from the Trump administration. Accompanied by Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Ahn Duk-geun, Choi is scheduled to initiate discussions in Washington, DC with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer later this week.

According to Anadolu Agency, Choi emphasized the importance of these trade talks in fortifying the alliance between South Korea and the United States. Speaking to reporters at Incheon International Airport, he expressed his commitment to opening avenues for discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral ties. In addition to the trade talks, Choi is anticipated to participate in the Group of 20 (G20) meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors during his US visit.

The backdrop of these discussions is a recently imposed 25% tariff by the Trump administration on South Korean products, which has been temporarily reduced to 10% for a 90-day period. This development adds a critical dimension to the negotiations, as both nations seek to find common ground.

South Korean acting President Han Duck-soo has expressed optimism about the potential outcomes of the meeting. Highlighting the significance of the trade relationship with the US, Han articulated hopes for a mutually beneficial resolution through open dialogue and cooperation. His remarks, made during a Cabinet meeting, underscore the strategic importance of these talks for both countries.
