Seoul: South Korea stated on Tuesday its intention to strengthen relations with China, while maintaining its strong alliance with the United States, as reported by Yonhap News Agency. This announcement comes in the wake of remarks made by Foreign Minister Cho Hyun, who described China as 'somewhat problematic' for its neighbors.

According to Anadolu Agency, the South Korean presidency issued a statement clarifying the comments. It emphasized that South Korea aims to develop bilateral relations with China, grounded in its robust alliance with the United States. The statement was partly in response to a recent interview with The Washington Post, where Minister Cho remarked on China's growing assertiveness, which has prompted neighboring countries to be 'alert.'

The presidency explained that Minister Cho's remarks were part of South Korea's ongoing efforts to build a constructive relationship with China, one that contributes to regional stability, prosperity, and the well-being of people in the region. The statement underscored that these efforts are not meant to isolate China but to engage it constructively.

Minister Cho further noted that under President Lee Jae Myung's administration, South Korea aims to maintain positive relations with Beijing. Additionally, the country plans to continue its collaboration with the United States and Japan in engaging China to foster regional cooperation and peace.
