Gyeongju: South Korean fire authorities have successfully extinguished a wildfire that reignited in the southeastern city of Gyeongju, following a massive deployment of 500 firefighters and 20 helicopters, according to local media reports.
According to Anadolu Agency, the wildfire initially broke out on Saturday evening on a hillside in Ipcheon village, leading to the evacuation of nearly 70 residents. Although the fire was initially brought under control, it reignited on Sunday night, prompting additional firefighting efforts.
In response to the renewed threat, the forest service and the Marine Corps dispatched approximately 20 helicopters and 525 personnel to tackle the lingering flames. The main fire was successfully put out, but residual flames persisted, necessitating continued action.
The wildfire impacted at least 54 hectares of land, which is approximately the size of 76 football pitches.
