Seoul: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has announced plans for substantial investments in research and development within the defense and aerospace sectors by 2030. This initiative aims to enhance the nation's capabilities in securing essential technologies and developing advanced weapon systems.

According to Anadolu Agency, President Lee detailed these plans during the opening ceremony of the Seoul International Aerospace and Defense Exhibition (ADEX) 2025. He emphasized the government's ambition for South Korea to become one of the top four global defense powers. The exhibition, a biennial event, is taking place in Goyang, located northwest of Seoul.

President Lee stated, "By 2030, we will inject an unprecedented level of budget that surpasses expectations into defense and aerospace R and D to secure core technologies and weapon systems for future defense and to build the capabilities necessary for independent space development." He highlighted the focus on developing domestic technologies, components, and materials, such as special semiconductors, for defense applications.

In line with efforts to boost defense exports, Lee's chief of staff, Kang Hoon-sik, has embarked on a visit to Europe. The objective is to strengthen defense industry partnerships and expand South Korea's arms exports. Kang will also deliver letters from President Lee to several European countries with which South Korea aims to deepen defense cooperation.
