Seoul: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's recent remarks on a video depicting the abuse of a Palestinian individual by Israeli soldiers stress the significance of universal human rights, according to the country's foreign minister.
According to Anadolu Agency, Foreign Minister Cho Hyun addressed lawmakers at the parliament, stating, "I believe the substance of his remarks was to emphasize the importance of universal human rights and international humanitarian law." This statement comes in response to President Lee's sharing of a video linked to the mistreatment of Palestinians by Israeli forces, which sparked an online diplomatic exchange between Seoul and Tel Aviv.
On Sunday, President Lee reiterated his commitment to upholding universal human rights, following his posting of the contentious video. The video, recorded in 2024, showed Israeli soldiers mistreating a Palestinian boy, leading to a sharp reaction from Israel's Foreign Ministry, which labeled Lee's comments as "unacceptable."
Despite the backlash from Israel, President Lee stood by his criticisms, making further statements against Israel on both Friday and Sunday. In addressing the situation, Foreign Minister Cho assured lawmakers that the South Korean ministry interpreted Lee's statements as an appeal for "peaceful conflict resolution."
Cho emphasized that Seoul had engaged in close communication with Israel and that the issue had been resolved without further commentary from the Israeli side.
