Seoul: A special counsel has sought a warrant for the arrest of South Korea's former President Yoon Suk Yeol over allegations related to his brief martial law declaration in December of the previous year.

According to Anadolu Agency, the independent counsel, led by Cho Eun-suk, submitted an arrest warrant request to the Seoul Central District Court. The charges against Yoon include alleged abuse of power, falsification of official documents, violation of the Presidential Security Act, and obstruction of special official duties. Notably, the charge of treason was not part of this warrant request.

This arrest warrant request is the prosecution's second attempt, following the court's rejection of the first request late last month. The counsel has not provided specific reasons for the renewed request.

The investigation into Yoon's activities, initiated last month, has been intensive, focusing on insurrection and related charges. Yoon faced several hours of questioning on Saturday, during which he denied the allegations.

Yoon, who was ousted from office due to his failed attempt to impose martial law, was arrested and indicted for abuse of power and leading an insurrection in January. This made him the first sitting president to be held in custody. However, he was released from prison in March after a district court canceled his arrest, allowing him to stand trial without being physically detained.
