Seoul: South Korea's nominee for the foreign minister has committed to working towards establishing peace on the Korean Peninsula by initiating dialogue between North Korea and the United States.

According to Anadolu Agency, Cho Hyun, nominated by President Lee Jae Myung for the role of the country's top diplomat, emphasized that achieving peace on the peninsula will be a primary focus of Seoul's foreign policy.

Cho stated, "I believe that facilitating dialogue between North Korea and the United States to establish lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula is one of the top priorities of the Lee Jae-myung government's foreign and unification policy," during a conversation with reporters. He further assured that the government would collaborate with other agencies to ensure the smooth advancement of this goal in alignment with the president's vision.

His comments reflect President Lee's earlier commitment to halt ongoing hostilities with North Korea and to revive inter-Korean dialogue and cooperation. In addressing U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff increases and calls for greater defense cost-sharing, Cho advocated for a "calm and wise" approach, consistent with Lee's "pragmatic" diplomatic strategy.

Cho brings to the role a wealth of experience in multilateral diplomacy and trade. He previously served as both the first and second vice ministers under the Moon Jae-in administration and was the South Korean ambassador to the United Nations from 2019 to 2022. This extensive background in international relations positions him to navigate the complex dynamics of the region effectively.
