Seoul: South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung has announced his selections for the nation's foreign and defense ministries, marking a significant step forward in his administration nearly three weeks after assuming office. Former first Vice Foreign Minister Cho Hyun has been appointed as the new foreign minister. Meanwhile, Ahn Gyu-back, a four-term lawmaker from the ruling Democratic Party (DP), has been chosen to head the Defense Ministry.

According to Anadolu Agency, President Lee also nominated Chung Dong-young for the position of unification minister, who will oversee inter-Korean relations. These appointments follow President Lee's election in the June 3 snap elections, which were necessitated by the impeachment of his predecessor, Yoon Suk Yeol, after a failed attempt to impose martial law.

Cho Hyun, previously serving as vice minister under former President Moon Jae-in's administration, represented South Korea at the United Nations from 2019 to 2022. Ahn Gyu-back, known for his extensive experience in defense, has predominantly worked on the defense subcommittee in the National Assembly. If confirmed, Ahn would become the first civilian to lead the Defense Ministry since 1961.

Chung Dong-young, a former journalist turned veteran lawmaker, previously held the position of unification minister under the Roh Moo-hyun administration from 2004 to 2005. All nominated cabinet members will undergo a confirmation process by the parliament, ensuring their suitability for their respective roles.
