Southeast Asian Nations Endorse Trump’s Gaza Plan for Peace

Kuala lumpur: Southeast Asian nations have expressed their support for US President Donald Trump’s plan concerning the Gaza conflict, emphasizing the necessity for a “just and durable peace” in the Middle East. This endorsement came during a joint summit of the United States and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital.

According to Anadolu Agency, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, addressing Trump at the summit, stated, “We welcome your comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict.” Anwar, sitting alongside the leaders of the 11-member ASEAN bloc, highlighted the plan’s potential to restore hope in diplomacy amid intractable conflicts. He further conveyed trust in Trump’s leadership to achieve peace in the region.

The US plan, consisting of 20 points, proposes a phased ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel, effective since October 10, facilitated by regional and international mediation. The initial phase includes the exchange of hostages and prisoners, along with a partial Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Additionally, it outlines rebuilding efforts in Gaza and establishing a new governing body free from Hamas influence.

In recent developments, Israel violated a ceasefire established in January, with escalations commencing in March. The conflict has resulted in over 68,500 deaths and more than 170,300 injuries since October 2023, as reported by the Gaza Health Ministry.

Besides the Gaza plan, Prime Minister Anwar also commented on the peace agreement between Cambodia and Thailand, describing the occasion in Kuala Lumpur as a “historic moment.” He expressed gratitude towards Trump for his role in facilitating peace and emphasized the importance of extending such efforts to other conflict-affected regions, particularly Gaza, to restore justice and humanity in global affairs.

Anwar further remarked on ASEAN’s role in promoting peace, stating, “This accord stands as a testament to ASEAN’s growing voice as a bridge for peace, proving that moderation and dialogue can resolve even the most entrenched disputes.”
