Southern Chinese City of Jiangmen Sees Over 1,700 Chikungunya Fever Cases

Jiangmen: The southern Chinese city of Jiangmen has experienced an outbreak of Chikungunya fever, with over 1,700 cases reported. This viral illness, primarily spread by mosquitoes, has prompted local health authorities to take action, as reported by state-run Xinhua News on Saturday.

According to Anadolu Agency, authorities in Jiangmen, located in Guangdong Province, announced on Friday that there were a total of 1,714 confirmed cases of Chikungunya fever. This significant number of cases has led to the city declaring a public health emergency response.

During a press conference held on Saturday, officials reassured the public that all reported cases were mild. There have been no reports of severe or fatal infections. In response to the outbreak, the city government declared a Level III public health emergency on Friday.

Chikungunya fever spreads to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito, with common symptoms including fever and joint pain. While the virus is rarely fatal, certain populations, such as newborns, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems, are at a higher risk.
