Madrid: Spain and Jordan on Thursday signed a joint declaration on Strategic Partnership, marking a significant enhancement in the bilateral relations between the two nations. The agreement was signed during the visit of Jordanian King Abdullah II to Madrid.

According to Anadolu Agency, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and King Abdullah II formalized the declaration, which aims to bolster political, economic, social, cultural, cooperation, and defense ties. A statement from the Spanish government highlighted that this agreement represents the highest level of relationship between two states and is the first such agreement Jordan has established with a Western country.

In addition to the strategic partnership, Spain and Jordan agreed to establish an extradition treaty. This treaty will provide a legal framework for the reciprocal surrender of individuals wanted for crimes recognized under both countries’ legal systems. The two nations also signed a memorandum of understanding on agriculture, facilitating bilateral cooperation through the exchange of technical and legislative knowledge and experiences.

The discussions between Prime Minister Sanchez and King Abdullah II also touched on the ongoing violence in Gaza. They addressed the forthcoming UN-hosted international conference in New York, where Spain and Jordan will co-chair a working group focused on establishing a Palestinian state. The Spanish government statement further noted that Sanchez briefed Abdullah on the progress of a draft resolution being promoted with Palestine before the UN General Assembly. This resolution calls for Israel to end the humanitarian blockade on Gaza and allow unrestricted access for humanitarian aid.

The statement also mentioned that the prime minister discussed the European Union’s review of the Association Agreement with Israel, citing concerns that it violates Article 2 of the Convention on Human Rights.
