Spain Voices ‘Full Solidarity’ with Denmark, Greenland After US Appoints Special Envoy

Madrid: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Tuesday expressed 'full solidarity' with Denmark and Greenland, following the United States' decision to appoint a special envoy to the territory.

According to Anadolu Agency, Sanchez emphasized the importance of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity, noting that these principles are central to the European Union and nations globally. He highlighted the significance of security in the Arctic, stating that Spain seeks to collaborate with allies and partners on this priority. "We convey our full solidarity with Denmark and the people of Greenland," Sanchez wrote on the US social media platform X.

The announcement of the special envoy was made by US President Donald Trump, who appointed Jeff Landry, the governor of Louisiana, as the US special envoy to Greenland. Trump took to his Truth Social platform to express that Landry understands the importance of Greenland for US national security and is committed to advancing the country's interests to ensure the safety of its allies and the broader global community.

Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish sovereignty, has been a point of interest for the US due to its strategic geographical location and abundant mineral resources. Trump's previous comments likened owning Greenland to an "absolute necessity" for US economic security, comparing it to a "large real estate deal." However, both Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected any proposals to sell the territory, reiterating Denmark's sovereignty over the island.
