‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Breaks Netflix Viewing Records in Premiere Week

SEOUL: The second season of the South Korean series "Squid Game" has broken records, becoming Netflix's most-watched show during its premiere week, amassing 480 million viewing hours by Sunday.

According to Anadolu Agency, the streaming platform reported that "Squid Game" season 2 quickly ascended to the top of the Netflix Global Top 10, entering the platform's most popular list faster than any previous show. Since its release, the new season has achieved the number one ranking in 92 countries, an exceptional achievement for a non-English language series.

The storyline of "Squid Game" revolves around a clandestine contest where 456 participants play lethal versions of traditional Korean children's games with a grand prize of 45.9 billion won, equivalent to $31.5 million. The latest installment has outperformed the first season, which garnered 448 million viewing hours in its fourth week after debuting in September 2021. A third season is anticipated to be released later in the year.

Additionally, a study conducted by the media research institute K EnterTech Hub suggested that Netflix could potentially earn over 1.5 trillion won, or approximately $1.02 billion, in profit from the second season alone. However, Netflix refuted this projection, stating, "It is not feasible to assess profits based on the success of one single production," as reported by the JoongAng Daily.
