Manchester:Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has called for Manchester City to be stripped of their titles and face a multi-year punishment due to breaches of financial rules, suggesting measures such as a transfer ban and points deductions.
According to Anadolu Agency, Gerrard voiced his opinions on The Overlap podcast, emphasizing the need for the club to face consequences, though he believes individual players should not have to return their medals.
Gerrard stated that relegating Manchester City to the Championship would be unfair to clubs fighting for promotion, as it would occupy a promotion slot. He suggested that a more appropriate punishment would involve a transfer ban and points deduction over time.
An independent Premier League commission found Manchester City guilty of significant financial rule violations from the 2009-10 to 2017-18 seasons, including creating "sham" contracts to inflate revenue. The club has appealed the ruling, denying the allegations, and sanctions are still pending.
