Sudan: Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced on Wednesday that they have seized control of a strategic border area shared with Egypt and Libya, following the withdrawal of the Sudanese army from the region. The RSF's claim marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict between the two forces.

According to Anadolu Agency, a spokesperson for the RSF stated that the group successfully captured the "Triangle" area, a critical junction connecting Sudan, Libya, and Egypt, after engaging in clashes with the Sudanese army. The spokesman also reported that the army had suffered considerable losses in both personnel and equipment during these confrontations.

The Sudanese army acknowledged its retreat from the border area, describing it as part of "defensive arrangements to repel aggression." The army further accused forces loyal to Libyan military commander Khalifa Haftar of providing support to the RSF militia, labeling it as a "reprehensible act" and a "flagrant violation of international law."

Since April 2023, the RSF and the Sudanese army have been embroiled in a fierce power struggle, which has resulted in thousands of deaths and has plunged Sudan into a severe humanitarian crisis. Reports indicate that over 20,000 people have been killed, and 15 million have been displaced, according to United Nations and local figures. However, US-based researchers suggest the actual death toll could be as high as 130,000.
