Bern: The Swiss Cities Association called for a nationwide response to adapting to climate change and the resulting heat waves, Swissinfo reported Sunday.
According to Anadolu Agency, the association emphasized that adapting to climate change is a collective societal task. Hanspeter Hilfiker, president of the Swiss Cities Association, highlighted the necessity of collaboration between cities, cantons, and the federal government to effectively address the challenges posed by climate change.
Swissinfo reported that while cities are already aware of climate change and have implemented several measures, there is a need for a structured funding framework and national coordination to prioritize these efforts effectively.
Hilfiker proposed specific measures such as removing paving from public spaces, increasing urban greenery, and renovating school buildings to help cities adapt to rising temperatures. He also advocated for the installation of air-conditioning systems in certain indoor spaces, like hospitals and schools, while noting that such systems are just one component of a broader strategy to ensure cities remain livable during heat waves.
