Bern: Switzerland is prepared to present a "more attractive offer" in ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, as confirmed by the Swiss government on Monday. This move comes amidst the absence of any planned countermeasures in response to the recent US decision to impose a 39% tariff on Swiss imports.

According to Anadolu Agency, the Federal Council has resolved to persist with negotiations following the US's announcement of the increased tariff rate. The council emphasized Switzerland's dedication to ensuring fair treatment compared to its primary competitors, aiming to secure favorable economic conditions.

The Federal Council's statement highlighted its determination to continue discussions with the United States, even beyond the current joint statement proposal and the impending deadline of August 7. The council has been engaging with the business community to develop new strategies for its negotiations, aiming to reach a comprehensive trade agreement.

Switzerland is entering this phase with the readiness to propose an enhanced offer that addresses US concerns and seeks to alleviate the current tariff situation. The two nations have witnessed their bilateral trade quadruple over the past two decades, with Switzerland ranking as the sixth-largest foreign investor in the US.

The council expressed its intention to preserve and expand these dynamic trade ties. The newly announced tariffs, effective from August 7, would subject nearly 60% of Swiss exports to a 39% surcharge, placing Switzerland at a "distinct disadvantage" compared to other trading partners like the EU, UK, and Japan, which face lower tariff rates.
