Damascus: Syria’s foreign minister announced on Saturday discussions to establish a joint Syrian-Danish business council during talks held in Damascus. The initiative highlights Denmark’s emerging role as a key partner for Syria in the aftermath of the Assad regime’s fall.

According to Anadolu Agency, Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani emphasized Syria’s regained national sovereignty and identified Denmark as a critical ally. During a press conference with Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen, Shaibani expressed gratitude towards Copenhagen for its supportive stance in the UN Security Council and its backing of Syria’s unity and decision-making process.

Discussions between the two officials focused on enhancing bilateral relations, improving diplomatic representation, and fostering cooperation. A significant outcome of the talks was the proposal to establish a joint business council aimed at strengthening economic ties between Syria and Denmark.

Shaibani extended an invitation to Danish private-sector companies, particularly those in the renewable energy sector, to invest in Syria. This outreach aligns with the new administration’s strategy of creating an open economy through international partnerships and good governance.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry earlier released a statement confirming that Shaibani had received Rasmussen and his delegation in Damascus. The discussions sought to address mutual concerns and explore avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation.

Syria is actively pursuing the reconstruction of its international relationships following years of isolation due to the 14-year conflict initiated by the former Assad regime.
