Damascus: Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul convened in Damascus on Thursday to discuss strategies for enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors.

According to Anadolu Agency, the meeting concentrated on reinforcing the bilateral relations between Damascus and Berlin, with a focus on political, economic, and humanitarian collaboration. The discussions also touched on recent regional and international developments of mutual concern. The Syrian Foreign Ministry, in a statement, highlighted the importance both nations placed on diplomatic dialogue and direct communication to support regional stability and serve the interests of their populations.

Wadephul expressed Germany's commitment to supporting Syria's political transition and economic recovery. He emphasized the significance of Syria's stability for Germany's interests, affirming that a safe and stable Syria is a shared goal for Germany and Europe, as reported by the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).

The German Foreign Minister acknowledged Syria's potential to play a pivotal role in the region, linking the Gulf region and the Mediterranean Sea. He was moved by the destruction witnessed in Damascus, which he likened to Germany's post-World War II devastation. Wadephul asserted Germany's responsibility in contributing to Syria's reconstruction, expressing confidence in Syria's new direction.

Wadephul also noted that German investors would be keen to invest in Syria, provided there is a conducive environment. He discussed with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani the necessity of a secure legal framework, an effective banking system, and political stability to enhance economic cooperation between the two countries.

Syria is actively working to revive its economy by attracting investors and signing trade agreements with regional states and companies. This follows the departure of Bashar al-Assad to Russia in late 2024, which ended the Baath Party's long-standing rule since 1963.
