Sanaa: Syria and Kuwait have agreed to activate bilateral cooperation mechanisms and establish a joint high-level coordination committee during recent talks held in Kuwait City. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah reached an agreement to form the committee under their leadership, as stated by the Syrian Foreign Ministry.
According to Anadolu Agency, the two nations also decided to reactivate existing joint committees to oversee various areas of bilateral cooperation. The discussions, which took place during al-Shaibani's official visit to Kuwait, focused on enhancing diplomatic coordination and the exchange of ambassadors between Syria and Kuwait.
The ministers also explored opportunities to strengthen economic and investment collaboration by proposing the establishment of a Syrian-Kuwaiti business council. This initiative aims to improve coordination between chambers of commerce and business councils in both countries, fostering economic growth and development.
During his visit, al-Shaibani held talks with Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. The discussions centered on reinforcing bilateral relations and expanding cooperation to benefit both nations. Additionally, the two sides reviewed regional developments and efforts to promote security and stability across the region.
Al-Shaibani expressed Syria's support for Kuwait, emphasizing respect for the Gulf country's sovereignty and condemning any attacks targeting Kuwait or other Gulf Cooperation Council member states. The visit occurred amidst escalating regional tensions following a joint offensive by the US and Israel against Iran in February, which led to retaliatory drone and missile strikes by Tehran targeting Gulf nations hosting US assets.
While a Pakistani-mediated memorandum of understanding was signed by the US and Iran last month to address their conflict, tensions have flared again over the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in renewed exchanges of attacks between the two countries.
