Damascus: Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa has issued a presidential decree appointing Nour al-Din Ahmad Issa as the governor of Hasakah province, according to reports.

According to Anadolu Agency, the appointment is part of a comprehensive ceasefire and integration agreement reached on January 18 between the Syrian government and the YPG/SDF organization. This agreement includes measures to reestablish state control in northeastern regions of Syria. Among its provisions is the presidential appointment of a governor for Hasakah, ensuring political participation and local representation.

Syrian security forces and administrative bodies have regained entry into previously SDF-controlled areas, such as Hasakah, Qamishli, and Ayn al-Arab (Kobani). They have also taken control of key infrastructure, including airports, oil fields, and border crossings. The accord outlines a phased transition of security duties, the reestablishment of state institutions, and the incorporation of SDF forces into official government structures.

On January 16, President Sharaa issued a decree recognizing Syrian Kurds as an integral component of the Syrian populace, highlighting their cultural and linguistic identity as pivotal to the nation's unified identity. On the same day, the Syrian Army initiated operations against the SDF west of the Euphrates River, which later extended eastward with the aid of tribal forces, resulting in the government reclaiming territories previously held by the group.
