Latakia: Syrian authorities announced the apprehension of a 'terrorist cell' member in the northwestern province of Latakia. The Interior Ministry identified the individual as Basel Issa Ali Jamahiri, who was captured in the village of Duweir Ba'bada in the Jableh countryside. He faces charges of being affiliated with the cell known as 'Saraya al-Jawad,' linked to former special forces commander Suheil al-Hassan.

According to Anadolu Agency, the arrest led to the confiscation of several weapons and ammunition hidden in various locations. Suheil al-Hassan, known for his role in the Assad regime's repression during the Syrian revolution from 2011 to 2024, is associated with the regime's violent tactics, including the use of barrel bombs against popular protests.

The Interior Ministry detailed that the arrest was part of a broader security operation executed by the Internal Security Command in Latakia province. Earlier on Wednesday, Syrian authorities had announced the seizure of improvised explosive devices and various weapons in an operation targeting the 'Saraya al-Jawad' cell, which resulted in the arrest of one member and the neutralization of three others.

The new Syrian administration is actively working to enhance security conditions across the nation and address remnants of the former regime accused of instigating unrest. With Bashar al-Assad's departure to Russia, ending nearly 25 years of leadership and the Baath Party's long-standing rule since 1963, a transitional administration led by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was established in January.
