Syria: Syria's justice minister announced that the government has demanded the handover of former President Bashar al-Assad and all those involved with him, as authorities advance a transitional justice process. Mazhar al-Wais explained that a general amnesty decree was issued as a necessity due to the intricate legal and legislative situation. He described it as constitutional and legally sound.

According to Anadolu Agency, on Wednesday, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa issued a decree granting a general amnesty for certain crimes and reducing sentences for others. In an interview with Al Jazeera, Wais stated that the decree's implementation began immediately, resulting in the release of 1,500 people. He estimated that approximately half a million Syrians could benefit from the amnesty.

Wais emphasized that the pardon excludes individuals responsible for major crimes against Syrians, stating that no one involved in harming the Syrian people has been or will be released. On transitional justice, Wais indicated that the ministry is following a path that rejects both revenge and impunity, with trials expected to commence soon once judicial files are completed.

Regarding accountability for former regime officials, Wais highlighted the necessity of handing over Bashar al-Assad and his associates, advocating for a clear legal process that compels states to meet their legal and moral obligations. He asserted that Syrian justice will not remain silent over any criminal, vowing to pursue them through legitimate legal means.

Assad, who governed Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia in late 2024, ending the Baath Party's long-standing rule that began in 1963. A new transitional administration led by Sharaa was established in January.
