Ankara: Syria released the terms of a ceasefire agreement Wednesday with Druze leaders in Suwayda to end recent unrest in the southern province and reintegrate it under state authority following days of deadly clashes.

According to Anadolu Agency, a statement by the Interior Ministry and a recorded message by Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Youssef Jarboua outlined the terms, which include an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire. A joint monitoring committee will oversee the implementation and commitment to the ceasefire, alongside the deployment of internal security forces. These forces, including local Suwayda recruits, will be stationed in Suwayda city and surrounding areas to maintain order and protect civilians. Local leadership in security affairs will be appointed to manage the province's security efforts.

The agreement also emphasizes respect for civilian life and property, control of heavy weapons in coordination with community and religious leaders, and the full reintegration of Suwayda under the state with full sovereignty reasserted across its territory. Additionally, the reactivation of state institutions under Syrian laws and regulations is included, along with the guarantee of equal rights for Suwayda residents through laws ensuring justice and equality and promoting social peace.

The terms further detail the investigation of violations committed during the unrest, the identification of those responsible, and ensuring victims are compensated. The state is tasked with securing the Damascus-Suwayda road and restoring essential services across the province. The agreement also calls for the release of detainees and the disclosure of missing persons.

Clashes erupted between armed Druze militias and Bedouin groups in Suwayda after both sides reportedly seized vehicles from each other. The Interior Ministry reported that more than 30 people have been killed and nearly 100 injured in the violence.
