Damascus: The Syrian Army said Monday it repelled a 'large-scale' drone attack targeting several military bases near the Iraqi border, the SANA news agency reported. The Syrian Army's Operations Command informed SANA that the attack involved multiple drones targeting positions near the border with Iraq at dawn. Syrian units managed to confront and neutralize most of the incoming drones.

According to Anadolu Agency, the military confirmed plans to carry out an 'appropriate response' to neutralize any threat and prevent further attacks on Syrian territory. No immediate information was provided regarding casualties or damage resulting from the attack.

The army did not disclose the launch site of the drones. Syrian bases have been previously targeted by similar attacks originating from within Iraqi territory, the most recent of which occurred on Saturday. No group has claimed responsibility for the latest attack.

An Iraqi group loyal to Iran, known as Saraya Awliya al-Dam (Brigades of the Guardians of Blood), claimed responsibility for a previous attack a week earlier targeting a Syrian army base in the northeastern province of Hasakah.

Regional tensions have been heightened since Israel and the US launched an offensive against Iran on February 28, resulting in over 1,340 casualties, including the death of then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran has conducted drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties, damage to infrastructure, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
