Ankara: 49 Syrian cadets are scheduled to commence their training at Turkey's military academies on Friday, as confirmed by the National Defense Ministry. This initiative marks a significant step in military cooperation between Syria and Turkey.

According to Anadolu Agency, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa recently engaged in discussions with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul in Damascus. The talks aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing cooperation across political, economic, and humanitarian domains. Both leaders also addressed current regional and international developments of mutual interest.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry released a statement emphasizing the importance of diplomatic dialogue and direct communication to foster regional stability and cooperation that benefits both nations. Wadephul expressed Germany's commitment to supporting Syria's political transition and economic recovery, highlighting the importance of Syria's stability for Germany's interests.

Wadephul, in his statements prior to departure, noted that a stable and secure Syria is a strategic goal for both Germany and Europe. He emphasized Syria's potential role as a regional influencer and a bridge between the Gulf region and the Mediterranean Sea.

The German minister was emotionally affected by the destruction witnessed in Damascus, likening it to the devastation in Germany post-World War II. He asserted Germany's obligation to aid in Syria's reconstruction, expressing confidence in Syria's new direction. He also mentioned that German investors are prepared to invest in Syria, provided there is a conducive environment, secure legal frameworks, an effective banking system, and political stability.

Syria has been actively seeking to revitalize its economy by attracting international investors and establishing trade agreements following the departure of Bashar al-Assad to Russia in late 2024, which ended the Baath Party's long-standing rule since 1963.
