Washington: Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa met with members of the Syrian community in Washington during his current visit to the US, local media reported Monday.

According to Anadolu Agency, during Sunday's meeting, Sharaa highlighted the achievements made by Syria, emphasizing the determination of the state and its people to rebuild and overcome challenges. He underscored the importance of the diaspora's connection to their homeland and their role in portraying Syria's true image and defending its causes.

Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and US Special Envoy for Syria and Ambassador to Trkiye, Tom Barrack, were also present at the meeting. Sharaa praised the Syrian community's efforts and initiatives, which reflect their deep sense of belonging and pride in their country.

The Syrian president, who arrived in the US early Sunday, is scheduled to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday. The discussions will focus on bilateral and regional issues, with a particular emphasis on the potential lifting of US sanctions on Syria. Sharaa's visit marks the first by a Syrian president since Syria gained independence in 1946.
